Within Jeffco, there are 4,068 NEP/LEP ELLs. These students represent 142 different languages. The ESL program of Jeffco ensures that our wonderful ELLs receive appropriate and equitable education. ELLs must not only learn the content areas at their particular grade level (reading, writing, math, science and social studies), but they also have to learn aspects of a second language such as new vocabulary, different grammatical forms, spelling patterns, and discourse patterns. It is the job of the ESL Teacher to support these students in developing fluency in the English language. To do this, we work closely with teachers to help them include ESL strategies in their instruction and to ensure that all four domains of language (speaking, listening, reading and writing) are covered in all content areas.
